Armenia, situated along the route of the Great Silk Road, is a
landlocked country of rugged mountains and extinct volcanoes, located in
the southern Caucasus, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
It is the smallest of the former Soviet republics, bounded by Georgia on
the north, Azerbaijan on the east, Iran on the south, and Turkey on the
west.

Total area: 29 800 square kilometers (11 490 square miles)
Terrain: Rugged mountains and extinct volcanoes, one-third of the
country is pastureland, forest and woodland cover 12 percent.

"The Fund for Armenian Relief (FAR) was founded after the devastating earthquake
which struck North-Western Armenia in December 1988. As the humanitarian arm of
the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, it was originally known as the
Diocesan Fund for Armenia's Recovery (DFAR). In February 1993, FAR was formally
reorganized into a Private Voluntary. FAR is headquartered in New York City and
