GEOnet Names Server
A sophisticated database including over 5 million place names world-wide. Maintained by two U.S. agencies - the National Imagery and Mapping Agency, and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. Probably the largest online gazetteer for most countries of the world. A pull-down menu allows searching by country, retrieving thousands or tens of thousands of records for most East European countries. Records give the name of each location or feature, variant spellings, latitude and longitude, and additional numeric data. Searches may focus on a variety of elements, such as populated place, administrative region, type of area, vegetation, and fresh- and saltwater features. Searches may also be limited to areas demarcated by two lines each of latitude and longitude.

Libraries

As of early 2004, no libraries in Albania have created websites. The largest library is the National Library of Albania, with more than one million volumes.

Albanian Collections at the British Library
The British Library Slavonic and East European Section acquires material across the spectrum of the humanities and social sciences. It is responsible for obtaining and making available material published in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and for material in the languages of those countries published anywhere in the world. This page provides an overview of the Albanian Collections, illustrated by specific examples.

Albanian Collections at the Library of Congress
The Library of Congress has more than 13,500 volumes of monographs, annuals, and bound periodicals from or about Albania, covering nearly all disciplines. Most of the materials were published from 1950 to the present. Special collections contain additional materials, such as rare books, maps, music scores, sound recordings, motion pictures, microfilm, manuscripts, and newspapers.

Immigration History Research Center
The IHRC, affiliated with the University of Minnesota, possesses several retrospective Albanian-American newspapers and serials, as well as monographs and other materials.

The Online Books Page
OPB links to more than 20,000 freely available e-books. The site is hosted by the University of Pennsylvania Library and is created by a University of Pennsylvania researcher, who welcomes information about additional online books. The site links to at least two books about Albania: The Library of Congress's Albania: A Country Study (1994); and M. Edith Durham's High Albania (London, 1909).

Archival Research Catalog
The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration has recorded only selected materials in its catalog. It does contain, however, more than 100 references to Albania.

National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections
The NUCMC website, maintained by the Library of Congress, informs about its program and links to the Archival and Mixed Collections of the RLG Union Catalog and to OCLC MSS Records. Both the RLG and OCLC mss catalogs include records pertaining to Albania. Each of these two mss union catalogs contains records not found in the other.

Koha Jone Online
An Albanian-language daily from Tirana. The paper edition was founded in 1991; it quickly became Albania's largest-circulation newspaper, but is now second to Shekulli. The website provides a history of the paper in Albanian and in English. The search feature retrieves articles from at least as far back as January 2003.

Korrieri
Takes a long time to load. Considered one of the best papers in Albania. In Albanian.

Republika
A newspaper-format weekly in Albanian from Tirana. Organ of the Republican Party. Provides an archive of recent months.

Rilindja Demokratike
A newspaper-format, general weekly in Albanian from Tirana. The paper edition was founded in 1991. Organ of the Democratic Party of Albania. Current issue only.

Shekulli
A daily in Albanian from Tirana. Founded ca 1997. Users must establish a password to use it. The largest-circulation newspaper in Albania.
